THE MINISTER FOR INNOVATION, INDUSTRY, SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
Innovation belongs at the heart of every Australian business and
industry. Our imagination, creativity and ingenuity are our great
strengths, and have long been recognised internationally. In the
competitive global market of the twenty-first century, it is essential
that we maintain our reputation for excellence in design and manufacturing.
The Australian Government is proud to support innovative businesses
and professionals across the nation who have taken up that challenge. All
will make a critical contribution to the health of our industries and our
economy.
Reece has a proud history of fostering innovation in Australian design.
The Reece Bathroom Innovation Awards allow both industry professionals and
emerging talents to showcase true craftsmanship and creativity.
I am sure they will prove a rich source of inspiration for aspiring
design professionals in and beyond Australia.
I offer my congratulations and wish all involved the best of luck for
this year’s awards.
Senator Kim Carr

THE MINISTER FOR INNOVATION, SERVICES AND SMALL BUSINESS
Good design is a key strategic business capability. It can assist
businesses to create stronger and more appealing products and services,
foster dynamic organisational cultures and create passionate customers.
The Reece Bathroom Innovation Awards (BIA) is one of Australia’s most
prestigious design competitions. Established by Reece to encourage original
and innovative product design, the award is open to design students and
professionals and celebrates emerging and established design talent.
The BIA plays an important role in recognizing that design is a fundamental
building block of innovation and a critical enabler of competitive,
profitable and sustainable industries. The award also encourages design
to assist businesses to improve competitiveness and profitability.
On behalf of the Victorian Government, I’d like to thank Reece
Australia for its continued support of Victoria’s innovative design
industry. Through encouraging local designers, the award promotes design
excellence in developing world-class Australian designed products.
I encourage all businesses to embrace the benefits offered by a dynamic
design industry and wish established and up and coming designers the best
of luck in this year’s BIA competition.
The Hon Louise Asher MP
Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business
As a product design teacher at TAFE NSW - South Western Sydney Institute’s Lidcombe College, I have found established national design competitions such as the Reece Bathroom Innovation Awards (BIA) to be highly supportive to the learning and development of design students in Australia.
The competition offers a valuable opportunity for students – such as our own Alex Lee, who won the 2010 Student Award for his innovative Shower Snake System – to work on real briefs relevant to contemporary design in Australia and to compete against other participants from across Australia.
From a teaching perspective, the annual competition allows design educators to plan involvement in the competition as part of the delivery of a design course. This means students gain practical experience producing professional design solutions for a prominent brand and high quality work for their design folio. The prize and prestige are also great motivators for student performance and can open significant opportunities for the winner’s professional development.
For the finalists in the competition there is also the added fulfilment of seeing their work exhibited on a national stage as part of the Bathroom Innovation Award ceremony at the ‘Saturday in Design’ event in Melbourne and in accompanied media coverage.
This is a further opportunity for the students to network and receive feedback from industry representatives and visitors to the BIA show, and assists in raising the quality of the student’s portfolio of design work and future employability.
Reece are to be congratulated on running the competition so successfully and for contributing to design education in Australia. We look forward to our students’ continued involvement in the future Bathroom Innovation Awards.

Teacher of Design – Lidcombe Design
